How much does a set of bicycle wheels cost?
Instead of buying a new bike, i want to put narrower wheels on my 2009 redline 925. It’s a single speed bike with a back wheel that can flip between fixed gear and single speed.I have all stock parts on the bike, except i took off the fenders. Is it safe for me to get narrower wheels and around how much will they cost?
Your bike came equipped with 700 x 28 tires. It would be possible to install 700 x 23 tires on the same wheels, no need to change anything else. Don’t expect a huge difference in performance, 23 mm tires will be a bit lighter, and will run at slightly higher pressure, but the difference is only 5 mm in width, so don’t expect miracles. As far as safety goes, 23 mm tires are a bit more prone to pinch flats, but otherwise no less safe than wider tires as long as you are on pavement. There are wide variations in prices for tires from below $20 for basic wire bead tires up to close to $100 each for high performance kevlar bead tires. You can often find good tires on sale somewhere in the middle of that range. The good news is that 700 x 23 is the most popular size for road tires, so there is a huge selection out there.
